Elevation

Lake Tahoe Elevation

Lake Tahoe sits at an elevation of 6,225 feet. Most people don’t have any issues with adjusting to the lower oxygen levels at this elevation; however, you may experience the effects of mild altitude sickness such as shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, and trouble sleeping. These effects are more likely to occur if you normally live at or close to sea level. If you experience altitude sickness symptoms, they will diminish as your body acclimates to the elevation. As long as symptoms remain mild, they do not require medical attention.

Although elevations below 8,000 feet are unlikely to produce the symptoms of altitude sickness in the majority of people, those with certain health conditions may be more likely to experience some altitude effects. If you have a lung or heart condition, are pregnant, or have previously experienced altitude sickness, please check with your health care provider.

This area is a traditional summer home for the Washoe People. Washoes would migrate up from the Carson Valley in the summer months and spend the summer hunting, fishing, and collecting medicine and food. At the end of the summer, the camps would be burnt at the end of the summer to clean and restore the land for the next season.

Today, The Máyala Wáta Restoration Project is a collaboration between the Washoe Tribe and the USFS to restore 300 acres of Meeks Meadow. After colonization, settlers drove the Washoe People out of the Lake Tahoe Basin and used the Meadow for cattle grazing, destroying the once pristine summer home for the Washoe People. The Meadow has since been encroached with conifers and lowered the water table in Meeks Creek.

It is the goal of the Washoe Tribe and USFS to remove the invasive conifers, do a culturally guided prescribed burn, and then revegetate the Meadow with native, culturally significant, and medicinal plants. The Desolation Wildness path is adjacent to the Meadow, and as you walk along the length of Meeks Meadow, you can see how dense with conifers it has become!

The California Tahoe Conservancy does a lot of great restoration work in the Tahoe Basin, and this project is a big one! The Conservancy is restoring and enhancing over 250 acres of the floodplain by returning river flows to the center of the Marsh. Returning river flows to the Marsh will enrich native fish and bird habitats. The restored Marsh will also act as a natural pollution filter, improving water quality before it reaches Lake Tahoe. With the Marsh wetter, it will be more resilient to droughts, flooding, and other climate change impacts.

The Conservancy will enhance public access and recreation opportunities in the northwest corner of the Marsh. The Conservancy also established a science advisory committee to guide the development of the project’s design and monitoring plans.
