Conference: Self-Guided Walking Tours
The Tribal EPA Region 9 Conference announces the Self-Guided Walking Tours.
Self-Guided Tours
Tours
The Tribal EPA Region 9 Conference will not provide guided tours at the 2022 Tribal EPA Region 9 Conference. However, there are several wonderful places to explore, and we provide information for self-guided tours in the South Lake Tahoe area.
Below are descriptions and maps for Meeks Meadow, Tahoe City Gatekeeper’s Museum, Taylor Creek Boardwalk, and Upper Truckee Marsh.
Weather and Road Conditions
Please check the latest National Weather Service weather forecasts and CalTrans SR-89 (west) and US 50 (east) road conditions.
Locations Map
Meeks Meadow
(Máyala Wáta Restoration Project)
Meek Creek Trail, Forest Rte 14N42, Tahoma, CA 96142
21.2 miles, 37 minutes (by car) map
This area is a traditional summer home for the Washoe People. Washoes would migrate up from the Carson Valley in the summer months and spend the summer hunting, fishing, and collecting medicine and food. At the end of the summer, the camps would be burnt at the end of the summer to clean and restore the land for the next season.
Today, The Máyala Wáta Restoration Project is a collaboration between the Washoe Tribe and the USFS to restore 300 acres of Meeks Meadow. After colonization, settlers drove the Washoe People out of the Lake Tahoe Basin and used the meadow for cattle grazing, destroying the once pristine summer home for the Washoe People. The Meadow has since been encroached with conifers and lowered the water table in Meeks Creek.
It is the goal of the Washoe Tribe and USFS to remove the invasive conifers, do a culturally guided prescribed burn, and then revegetate the meadow with native, culturally significant, and medicinal plants. The Desolation Wildness path is adjacent to the meadow, and as you walk along the length of Meeks Meadow, you can see how dense with conifers it has become!
Tahoe City Gatekeeper’s Museum
130 W Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145
https://www.northtahoemuseums.org/
32.2 miles, 54 minutes (by car) map
This museum has a ton of Washoe history and information on the Lake! A nice walking path and dam over the Truckee River leading into Lake Tahoe.
Taylor Creek Boardwalk
CA-89, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150
8.5 miles, 16 minutes (by car) map
Another significant site to the Washoe Tribe, The Cultural Resources Department, hold an annual Traditional Fishing day where youth and the community have the opportunity to make traditional fishing nets and baskets and catch Kokanee salmon using traditional methods.
Upper Truckee Marsh
(Cove East and the Upper Truckee Meadow Restoration Project)
Truckee Marsh, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150
3.4 miles, 8 minutes (by car) map
The California Tahoe Conservancy does a lot of great restoration work in the Tahoe Basin, and this project is a big one! The Conservancy is restoring and enhancing over 250 acres of the floodplain by returning river flows to the center of the Marsh. Returning river flows to the Marsh will enrich native fish and bird habitats. The restored Marsh will also act as a natural pollution filter, improving water quality before it reaches Lake Tahoe. With the Marsh wetter, it will be more resilient to droughts, flooding, and other climate change impacts.
The Conservancy will enhance public access and recreation opportunities in the northwest corner of the Marsh. The Conservancy also established a science advisory committee to guide the development of the project’s design and monitoring plans.
