The Numbers fire burned almost 20,000 acres of which 5,833 were on Washoe allotment land. The Washoe Tribe Environmental Protection Department is working with BIA (Bureau of Indian Affair), Fish and Wildlife, and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) to form a post fire restoration and cultural protection plan. Incorporating TEK in the restoration project is a key aspect of working with the partner agencies in planning, funding and implementation. The main goals of the project are to protect culturally significant sites that are now exposed due to fire, replant Pinyon Pine trees for future cultural seed harvesting, and to restore the overall ecological functions of the Pine nut range.
